Bijou Cafe is located in the heart of Downtown Sarasota’s Theatre + Arts District, across the street from the Sarasota Opera House. What was once a Texaco gas station is now a quaint continental restaurant with modern flair.
A native of South Africa, Chef-Owner Jean-Pierre Knaggs and his wife, Shay, welcome guests with genuine hospitality and unparalleled service.
After serving as a personal chef on a luxury yacht cruising around the world, Chef Jean-Pierre used influences from his travels to create all the recipes on the Bijou menu. (These are the real jewels.)
Two classic soups – A L’Oignon and Shrimp and Crab Bisque – are absolute stars. For a lighter start, try the Beet Citrus Salad.
Entrees range from a Roast Half Chicken to Pork Schnitzel, California Trout to Lobster Ravioli. There are steaks, too, of course, and everything is delicious. For dessert, may we suggest the Belgian Chocolate Mousse.
We’re thinking about sailing around the world so we can learn to cook as well as this guy.
In 2001, a kitchen fire threatened Bijou’s business. Today the thriving restaurant is 30 years strong. Make reservations to dine during opera season, when Bijou is a hot ticket – booking out months in advance.
The restaurant is a fine choice for any occasion, from birthdays to anniversaries, or special gatherings of friends and family. Its walls are adorned with local art, much of it from State Street Gallery. If you admire it, you can own it.
Bijou is open at 11:30 a.m. for lunch Monday to Friday, serving dinner every day beginning at 5 p.m. during the high season, then later closing on Sundays in the low season.
